Types of Surgical Forceps and Their Uses
Forceps are the most numerous instruments in any set. They fall into a few families.
Thumb (tissue and dressing) forceps Spring-type forceps held like a pencil. Toothed versions (Adson, Brown-Adson, Gillies, Cushing) grip tissue; smooth or serrated versions (dressing, DeBakey, Lucae) handle delicate tissue, vessels and dressings without trauma.
Hemostatic forceps Ring-handled with a ratchet lock. Halstead Mosquito and Kelly clamp small and medium vessels; Pean and Kocher clamp larger vessels and tough tissue.
Grasping forceps Allis and Babcock hold tissue, bowel and fascia; Backhaus towel forceps hold drapes; sponge forceps hold swabs.
Micro forceps Castroviejo and anatomic micro forceps for eye, plastic and microvascular surgery, with very fine tips.
How to choose Match the tip (teeth, serrations, smooth) and size to the tissue and the depth of the wound. Check tip alignment and spring tension, and choose titanium for light weight or tungsten-carbide inserts for durability.
