Adson Tissue Forceps: Uses, Details, Quality and Surgical Importance

What are they? Adson forceps are fine, spring-type thumb forceps. The tissue version has a 1x2 teeth tip (one tooth meeting two) that grips skin and fascia securely with little trauma. The dressing version has serrated jaws without teeth for delicate handling of dressings and soft tissue. Brown-Adson forceps have multiple fine teeth for firmer skin grip, and Adson micro versions have very fine tips for plastic and eye surgery.
Uses in surgery Holding skin edges while the surgeon sutures wounds; lifting tissue layers during dissection; grasping fascia and subcutaneous tissue; placing and removing dressings; handling sutures. They are used in general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopaedics, dentistry and minor procedures.

Care, cleaning and sterilization (IFU summary) Always follow the Instructions For Use (IFU) supplied with the instrument and your hospital's sterile-processing protocol. In general: rinse off blood and tissue promptly, never let them dry; open all box-locks and ratchets; clean with a neutral or enzymatic detergent and a soft brush (no steel wool or chlorine bleach); rinse with demineralized water; dry completely; lubricate hinges with an instrument-grade milk; then sterilize by a validated steam (autoclave) cycle. Inspect before every use and remove any instrument that is bent, cracked, stained, or has misaligned tips.
